Deliyla’s session was one that was rescheduled due to COVID-19, just like the end of her senior year and her graduation ceremony, which didn’t happen until it was almost July. Her session will always be one of my favorites because we laughed the entire time. It was steamy hot and humid during her session, but she handled it with grace and humor and the result was some beautiful images for her and her family.

It was especially an honor for me to take her photos because Deliyla was among the first students I taught at my current school three years ago. She worked her way from staff member to editor-in-chief of the school magazine by her senior year.

During her junior year, she faced personal obstacles and the loss of a beloved family member. She told me numerous times how proud he’d be to see her graduate and earn her letterman jacket. We incorporated his memory into her session, and I could tell she was thinking of him, especially during those quiet moments when I asked her to reflect on her journey.

We were also so grateful that her mom could be with us because she was laughing along with us and helping us get her letterman on and off in the heat.

I loved taking these for Deliyla and I hope you enjoy them.
